This year, the event will posthumously honor the life and work of Richard Winder, DO, with the Joyce Buchheit Excellence in HealthCare Award. Dr. Winder was a very well-known physician in the region. When he moved to the Farmington area in 1976, Dr. Winder began a general practice, and during his medical career in Farmington he was instrumental in setting up the women’s clinic for the St. Francois County Health Department and in establishing the St. Francois County Ambulance District. In addition, he was director of medical education for interns and residents at Mineral Area Regional Medical Center. Most recently, Dr. Winder served as the medical director of the Mineral Area Regional Medical Center emergency department until his retirement in 2012. Dr. Winder’s significant contributions to health care in our region spanned a 36-year career. He passed away in July 2018. Dr. Winder’s wife, Maxine Winder, will be receiving the award on his behalf.
The purpose of this prestigious annual award is to recognize an individual who has contributed significantly to the advancement of health care in our region. Joyce Buchheit, the award’s namesake, is a member of the Parkland Health Center Foundation Board of Directors. She also served on both the Parkland Health Center Board of Directors and the BJC HealthCare Board of Directors.
Past recipients of this award include Dr. Edward DuMontier (2016), Dr. George Oliver (2017), and Carol Coulter, RN (2018). All recipients are well-known community members and have served the medical needs of the Farmington area for over 100 years.
