Every first and third Wednesday from 1 - 3 p.m., anyone from the community can learn from our experts about how to manage diabetes. Our dietitians, Jeania Byerly and Shelley Hartmann, both registered dietitians and certified diabetes educators in the nutritional counseling department at Parkland Health Center, take turns leading the class.
Class content is personalized to the needs of the participants, but typically covers blood glucose monitoring, carbohydrate counting, meal planning, exercise goals, preventing complications and much more.
“When individuals are diagnosed with diabetes, they want to know immediately what they should be eating to help with blood sugar control,” said Byerly. “Once class participants are informed about carbohydrate counting and healthy meal planning, they gain the tools to manage their diabetes better. It’s wonderful to see patients get the confidence to take control of their diabetes!”
The class is free and all ages are welcome to participate. Registration is preferred but not required. For more information, please call 573.760.8396.
Classes are held at the Farmington Public Library, 101 North A Street.
